NGO Founder Reflects on the Services Offered By Flint Hills Community Clinic

Joshua Reed featured in Manhattan Magazine, spring 2018

I have been a volunteer at the Flint Hills Community Clinic since 2009. As a family nurse practitioner, I see individuals of all ages for primary care needs. From diabetes management to colds and sore throats, the Flint Hills Community Clinic has provided high quality care to the uninsured in the Manhattan community for over a decade.

Although the clinic does have policies in place to verify income to assure that individuals with the most need are receiving these free services, I have witnessed the staff at The Flint Hills Community Clinic work tirelessly to assure that those who qualify for these services receive them in a timely manner.

Working with local partners, the Flint Hills Clinic has provided hundreds of thousands of dollars in free medication, specialty consultations, medical equipment, and primary care services to countless individuals.

I look forward to the continued effort of the Flint Hills Community Clinic in their mission to provide primary care to those in need. I wish all of the patients, staff, and volunteers a wonderful holiday season, Merry Christmas, and Happy New Year.

May our 2019 be even better and may the services that we provide continue to touch the lives of so many.

Winter Coat Drive 2018 Completed

Thanks to the generosity of numerous individuals, our 2018 Winter Coat Drive has been a success! We collected over 50 adult coats and were able to work with Open Doors here in Wichita to assure that these reached some of the hundreds of homeless sleeping outside during our brutal Kansas winters. With an average low of 25°F during December, homeless community members must take all precautions to prevent winter-related injuries such as hypothermia and frostbite. We will continue to collect coats throughout the winter months so please reach out with any donations! Thanks for all you do!

We continue to accept donations for winter gear throughout the year. Please email us at info@nursesglobaloutreach.org if you are interested in setting up a donation.

NGO works with International Medical Relief to Provide Disaster Relief in Guatemala

NGO President and nurse practitioner Joshua Reed deployed to Antigua, Guatemala to assist International Medical Relief in providing much needed disaster relief services to individuals effected by the eruption of Volcan de Fuego on June 3, 2018. It is estimated that the blast and lava flow from the volcano resulted in hundreds being killed with hundreds more still missing. The local government estimates that over 3,000 Guatemalans have been displaced due to the eruption. Many of the roads were rendered nearly impassible due to the hardened volcanic flow and the naturally rough terrain.

The mission served over 300 people per day. Although many conditions were treated during the course of the deployment a high number of patients were seen and treated for mental health needs. Several of the Guatemalans served described symptoms consistent with PTSD and generalized anxiety disorder from having survived a natural disaster. Many of the individuals that were treated reported losing family members and all of their possessions after the volcanic eruption. Many individuals walked for miles to reach our medical sites and be treated for minor burns, infectious diarrhea, dehydration, malnutrition, as well as to receive care for chronic diseases.

The Guatemalan people were so very hospitable and it was an honor to serve them during our time in Guatemala.

International Medical Relief offers short-term assignments for volunteer medical professionals and dental professionals, students, and non-medical volunteers to conduct medical and dental clinics that provide free, expert care and health education in areas where it is limited or difficult to obtain. Another Successful Homeless Hygiene Drive

Two weeks ago, we started a hygiene product supply for the homeless day shelter here in Wichita, Open Doors.

The response was OVERWHELMING! We have managed to collect hundreds of hygiene products including toothbrushes, toothpaste, deodorant, soap, feminine napkins and socks. Men and women living on the street don’t often have these simple yet impactful conveniences so thanks to everyone who has donated to make someones day a little brighter!

NGO Attends Street Medicine Institute

Joshua Reed, nurse practitioner and founder of NGO, Inc. goes to Allentown, PA to learn more about providing care to the homeless.

Attendees of the 13th Annual International Street Medicine Symposium

NGO, Inc founder Joshua Reed had the opportunity to travel to Allentown, PA to attend the Street Medicine Institute Symposium. This high-yield symposium was targeted to those individuals and organizations that may be new to Street Medicine or in need of expert guidance to launch or enhance their Street Medicine activities.  This workshop provided an instructive overview of the history, principles, and practice of Street Medicine, followed by breakout sessions with experts in the field for personalized guidance and problem-solving.  The information learned at the symposium was wonderful and it is our hope that the skills gained will be brought back to Wichita and used to serve the homeless and underserved in our community.
